Operation Identification
Put It On All Your Valuables!
Operation Identification is a crime prevention program conducted by law enforcement agencies across the country. By helping you make your property easier to identify, the program discourages thieves and makes it easier to recognize and recover lost or stolen items.
How the Program Works
The Operation Identification program is simple. You use an engraving pen to mark your valuables with the letters MI ( Michigan) plus your 12 digit drivers license number (or federal tax identification number if you're participating as a business). Then, you list the items on an inventory sheet, keep the sheet in a safe place, and register your Operation Identification number with your local law enforcement agency. After you've registered, you'll receive window decals that let potential thieves know your valuables are marked.
Why It Discourages Theft
Marked property is more difficult to sell. Operation Identification decals discourage thieves by telling them that your property is marked. And if one of your marked valuables is stolen, it's easier for law enforcement officials to spot and recover. It's also much easier to catch and prosecute a thief if he has damaging evidence in his possession.
What Valuables Should Be Marked
Most electronic equipment, tools, sporting goods and appliances can be engraved with your Operation Identification number. Valuables that would be damaged by engraving, such as china, glass, art or jewelry, should be photographed. Here are some of the items you should mark: TV sets, VCRs, stereo equipment, radios, car tape decks, recorders, fishing rods and reels, vacuum cleaners, kitchen appliances, typewriters, adding machines, dictating machines, cameras, binoculars, guns, hub caps, mag wheels, lawn mowers, snow blowers, bicycles, outboard motors, golf clubs, electric shavers, tools (hand and power), watches, clocks, and computers.
To Participate In Operation Identification, Just Follow These Simple Steps:
- Obtain an engraving pen and Operation Identification inventory sheet from the Grand Blanc Township Police Department.
- Engrave the letters MI ( Michigan) plus your 12 digit drivers license number in an obvious place on all valuable items. If you're participating as a business, use the letters MI and your nine-digit federal tax identification number.
- Record the serial number and make of each item on the inventory sheet.
- Photograph items that can't be marked such as paintings, glass, art or jewelry.
- Return only the card attached to your inventory sheet to the Grand Blanc Township Police Department.
- Keep the inventory sheet and photos of valuables in a safe location.
- Return the engraving pen to the Grand Blanc Township Police Department. Place the Operation Identification decals that you receive from the Grand Blanc Township Police Department in locations that are easy for a potential thief to see.
- When you sell an item, give the buyer a bill of sale.
- If you move, give the Grand Blanc Township Police Department your change of address.
- If your home or business is burglarized, contact the Grand Blanc Township Police Department immediately. Give the reporting officer your Operation Identification number, and the serial numbers and makes of all stolen items.
