Just wanted to let you know what is going on around Grand Blanc Township:
Perry House Renovations
We set up the structure for the bid review in conjunction with the County to make sure we were moving forward under the terms of the CDBG grant. We also asked a neutral architect, Mr. Asburger, to join our review committee. The awarding of the contracts will be completed the first part of November.
Negotiations/Arbitration/ Contracts
Sergeants have asked to go to Arbitration. We have some things that we have agreed on, but there are still some where we are a ways apart. Mr. Fanning is taking care of the procedural work. We have not started negotiations with the patrol and dispatch because they are in the process of an election to see if they are going to change their union representation. Keith is working on the individual contracts.
Ribbon Cuttings/ Groundbreaking Ceremonies
Ciena Health Systems broke ground for their new skilled nursing facility behind SOP during the second week in October. They plan on bringing about 120 skilled nursing jobs to this facility. In the area behind the Trillium theater, Paw Palace, a “pampered pet” facility had its Grand Opening and Prestige Point, a nursing care facility on Cook Road near Holly reopened after renovations making it a more comfortable and homelike facility.
Aerotropolis
This five county plan continues to move ahead as the state under Governor Snyder and “Next Michigan” makes plans for only five regions in the state to be the basis for economic development. This plan, along with the airport, the Karanondi Water line project and the northern extension of Automation Alley has the advantage of being the logistical center for the production and exporting of green energy products, technical industrial products, and food processing and distribution. The five counties involve the interconnection of I-75 north and south and I-69 east and west, the Canadian National and CSX railroads, Bishop International Airport, and the Blue Water Bridge and shipping ports at Port Huron. This plan allows for mutual economic development along the I-69 corridor to expand the opportunity for economic expansion and continuing export growth.
Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce
Public Policy Board - Recommendation of Endorsement of Dort Extension Project. Talk of potential process for political endorsement in the future.
Press Conference - Senator Debbie Stabenow talked of local “Green Energy” production in conjunction with her bill allowing incentives for the growth of green energy and technology.
Financial Market and Economic Update Overview - John Augustine, CFO and Chief Investment Strategist for Fifth Third Private Bank, has been on CNBC and Bloomberg talked on what the economic future looked like for the near future at a luncheon at the
Flint Golf Club
GLITTH Conference—Lansing Great Lakes International Trade and Transport Hub. A very interesting conference dealing with increasing product flow and economic development within the Michigan, Ohio and Ontario borders through collaboration between regional economic development organizations, governmental entities, and industry to identify bottlenecks and restraints that interfere with supply chain management and find ways to overcome the problems. It featured several panels including persons such as Governor Rick Snyder, Doug Rothwell, CEO, Business Leaders of Michigan, Roy Norton, Counsel General of Canada, Russell MacLellan, 24 th Premier of Nova Scotia and Don Weinstein, Next Generation Business Processes and Technologies, Dow Chemical. See me for further details.
Charging Stations
The plan for Michigan’s First Electric Exit dwindled to one Charger at the Park and Ride at Exit 106. Even though the chargers were free, the other businesses felt the cost of installation was too high. Thankfully, the Grand Blanc Community Fund gave us a grant for the installation at the Park and Ride site. However, getting a permit to put in the charger involved a lot more complications than we had planned on because it had to be approved by the Federal Government as well as the local, regional and state governments. Hopefully, it will be installed by the middle of November.
Homeowners Meeting
I brought people up to date on what was going on around the township at the monthly meeting of the Homeowners Association. They are still working on getting more subdivisions involved and have visited other communities with homeowner associations to get ideas and advice. They also talked about the possibility of working together to get a drug dog to replace our retired dog Casey.
School Opinion Leaders Luncheon
Cathy, Keith and I all attended one of these group meetings either at lunchtime or for breakfast. Dr. Abdella went over changes to the Strategic Plan, how Grand Blanc schools were coping with the school aid cuts, the new cut scores for the MEAP, and other factors where the school affects the community or visa versa.
TMI
Keith, Mike and I attended a meeting at the TMI Building on Baldwin Road along with members of the Genesee Regional Chamber and Career Alliance. We had a tour of the plant and an explanation of their modular controlled air systems that are now being shipped all over the country and overseas, especially to hospitals, labs and research locations that depend on a controlled temperature. They talked to us about their potential growth, since they are both functionally and aesthetically superior to other models.
