Dark Store Documentary
There is a great new documentary film from Dr. Dwight Brady, an Emmy award winning producer from Northern Michigan University, and 14 of his students that does an outstanding job in explaining the complex “Dark Stores” tax loophole issue facing Michigan communities. The “Dark Store” loophole is a tax scheme that has been exploited by Big Box retailers to greatly lower the amount of property taxes they pay. Retailers like Meijer, Lowes, Menards, Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club are arguing that the market value of their stores should be based on the sales of comparable properties that are vacant and abandoned, many times with deed restrictions limiting what they can be used for in the future. Please watch the film to see the devastating impact these decisions by the Michigan Tax Tribunal have had on our community.
